Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) is a lifelong developmental disability that affects the way a person relates and communicates with others. This results in severe problems of social relationships, communication and behavior.

According to World Health Organization (WHO), ASD occurs about 1 in every 160 children, or 56 per 10,000 of the total population. It is four times more common in boys than girls. ASD is found all over the world in families of every racial, ethnic and social background. Family income, lifestyle and educational levels do not affect the likelihood of a child having ASD.

The exact cause of ASD is unknown and there is no known cure at this time. However, studies show that children will benefit from early intervention using structured, individualized programmes. They can learn to function at home and in community. Some may even lead nearly normal lives.
