Sibu Autistic Association (SAA) was first formed in year 2000 by a few parents whose children were diagnosed with Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD), and some concerned members of the public. These children were unable to find a suitable and effective education programme in typical kindergartens or in government special needs classes.
SAA was officially registered with Registrar of Societies in year 2001, followed immediately by setting up a centre for children with ASD and related disorders from age 7 to 18 years old.
It started with 3 teachers and 3 children and has provided assistance and services to more than 200 children over the years. SAA provides specialized daily programme to ensure an effective and individualized programme due to their unique needs for intensive and consistent intervention. In year 2006, we started the first Early Intervention Programme (EIP) for children from age 2 to 6 years old (being the only centre in Sibu providing a specialized programme on a daily basis).
Since year 2006, SAA was housed in Agape Centre at Jalan Alan, with 4 other organizations. Although we are under one roof, we are running independently in providing varied services, management and financial supports. However, we have proudly and successfully work closely together providing for diverse special needs people in the community over the years.
SAA was granted Tax Exemption Status in year 2003. Moreover we are the members for the following organizations:
- National Early Childhood Intervention Council (NECIC)
- Social Welfare Council of Sarawak (SWCS)
- Association Of Registered Childcare Providers, Sarawak (PPBS) (under Taska Autisme Sibu)
